I say, I love to write.
They say: Write what you know.
At my age, that’s a lot, but unfortunately,
At my age, there’s also a lot I don’t know.
They say: Know what you write.
I know to Google things I’d like
to write more about.
For instance, I wanted to know why the masters wrote. What I found on Google was that the Aerogramme Writers’ Studio had already put together a list of famous writers on why they write.
I like simple and to the point and the following author quotes summed it up for my sometimes cluttered brain.
“That’s why I write,” says Chuck Palahniuk, “because life never works except in retrospect. You can’t control life, at least you can control your version.”
“Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don’t feel I should be doing something else.” – Gloria Steinem
But my favorite and probably the quote that best expresses my rationale is the one by Flannery O’Connor: “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” (And then when you read what you say, the truth of it will make you odd. It’s probably our Catholic upbringing.)
